CHS Science Research Program Student Named Semi-finalist in Prestigious Intel Competition
Posted on January 20th, 2012
City Honors senior Nicci Moran-Guiati is among 300 high school seniors from 181 high schools across the country who were named semifinalists for the Intel Science Talent Search 2012.
Nicci was selected from 1,839 entrants in America’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition for her project, Effect of Selective Serotonergic Reuptake Inhibitors on Radiation Therapy Cancer Cells. Colleges and universities regard the Intel STS semifinalist award to be evidence of exceptional academic promise.
Both Nicci and the City Honors Science Research Program will collect $1,000 checks each for this special distinction from the Intel Foundation. This year’s 40 finalists will be announced on January 25th by Society for Science & the Public and Intel.
Additionally, in 2011, Nicci submitted her abstract to the American Association of Cancer Researchers (AACR) and it was accepted. She was the only high school student to present her research at the conference alongside graduate students and post doctoral students. This conference is considered to be the premiere cancer research conference in the United States.
For almost 15 years, students from the City Honors Science Research Program have been paired with researchers from Roswell Park Cancer Institute for an intensive four year experience that leads to a thesis and special joint diploma between the research institution and school. In 2005, the program expanded to include the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. The current program coordinator is Ms. Kelly Hyla.
